Gray Scale of LED Displays

LED display's gray scale is one of its essential parameters, representing the color or gray level of the LEDs. It indicates the brightness level, refers to the number of distinguishable brightness within the same brightness level, from darkest to brightest.

LED display's gray scale determines its color representation. Generally, higher gray scales result in more vibrant colors, finer details in images, and a better ability to depict rich details.

LED display gray scales vary, including no gray, 8 levels, 16 levels, 32 levels, 64 levels, 128 levels, 256 levels, 1024 levels, etc. In domestic LED displays, an 8-bit processing system is commonly used, while international brands often use 10-bit processing system.

1. 8-bit Processing System: This corresponds to 256 (2 to the power of 8) levels of gray scale. In simple terms, it means 256 distinct brightness variations from black to white.

2. 10-bit Processing System: This corresponds to 1024 (2 to the power of 10) levels of gray scale. In simple terms, it means 1024 distinct brightness variations from black to white.

3. 12-bit Processing System: This corresponds to 4096 (2 to the power of 12) levels of gray scale. In simple terms, it means 4096 distinct brightness variations from black to white.

4. 14-bit Processing System: This corresponds to 16384 (2 to the power of 14) levels of gray scale. In simple terms, it means 16384 distinct brightness variations from black to white.

Even gray scale is a crucial factor to colors, it doesn't means larger scale is always better. as human eye has a limited resolution, and increasing the system's processing bits involves cost changes in other aspects such as video processing, storage, transmission, and scanning. This increase costs a lot, may diminish screen's cost-effectiveness. Generally speaking, consumer or commercial screens can take 8-bit system, while broadcast screens may take 10-bit system.
